Moving File LocationsYou can move your document files from your hard drive to the network server by performing the following steps: 1. Double-click "My Computer". 2. Double-click "C:\". 3. Find the location where your document files are. Try C:\My Documents Try C:\Winnt\Profiles\"your username"\Personal
Hint: If you can’t locate your files: Open Word. Select File. Select Save. Check what the location set up is. Click once on the down-arrow located to the right of the "Save in:" field
The line that is highlighted in the drop-down box should be the location of your files.
Return to "My Computer" and follow the path that would be displayed here.
4. When you have the directory located, open it. Move this window to the side for now. 5. Return to the "My Computer" window. 6. You will need to open the drive that is mapped to your home directory. Will be Drive F:\ Will start with your username.
Double-click the home directory icon.
7. Return to the window opened in Step #4. 8. You can select individual files or you can select the entire contents of the directory.
Selecting Individual Files If you click and drag one file from the hard drive window to the home directory window, it will copy the file to the new location while leaving the file in the original location. You now have two copies of the file. If you right-click and drag the file from the hard drive window to the home directory window, you will receive a pop-up menu. You can select "Move" from this window. It will move the original file from your hard drive to your home directory. You now have one copy of the file. You can select multiple files by clicking one file, holding down the CTRL key and clicking another file. You can select numerous files in this manner – just continue to hold down the CTRL key until you are finished selecting. You can then either click and drag (to copy the files) or right-click and drag (to move the files). Selecting Entire Contents To select the entire contents of a directory: Select "Edit" Select "Select All" This will highlight all items contained in that window. If you click and drag the files from the hard drive window to the home directory window, it will copy the files to the new location while leaving the files in the original location. You now have two copies of the files. If you right-click and drag the files from the hard drive window to the home directory window, you will receive a pop-up menu. You can select "Move" from this window. It will move the original files from your hard drive to your home directory. You now have one copy of the files. |
